The High School Affiliated to Fudan University (复旦大学附属中学, 复旦附中) is located in Shanghai, near Fudan University campus, and is among the most prestigious high schools in Shanghai. Each year the high school produces several hundreds of graduates, most of whom are admitted into well-established universities around China, as well as in foreign countries. Traditionally, Fudan University, one of the top universities in China, takes in most of the top graduates from the high school. The admission to the high school is open to all middle school graduates in the great area of Shanghai City and is highly competitive. Most students are selected through the High School Entrance Examination (中考).
High School Affiliated to Fudan University, a boarding key school, is now under the co-direction of Shanghai Education Commission (上海市教育委员会) and Fudan University. The high school, established in 1950, used to be appointed as a common high school directly subordinate to the leading branches mentioned above in the 1960s. Not until 1962 did High School Affiliated to Fudan University by name become one of the key schools in Shanghai.
The school has so far occupied a campus of 50,640 m2. At present, it has the construction area of about 42,000 m2 and the green fields of nearly 10,500m2.
Two reading rooms for the students in the school library with an area of 615 square meters are capable of seating an audience of 364. One room for the teaching materials has dominated an area of 175.6m2. Approximately, the information on one hundred thousand volumes in the electronic reading room has been stored in the computer system. In addition to this, the circulation of the books, which averages five copies per person each month, is totally controlled by the network. Furthermore, the school has many more up-to-date laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology. There are two rooms for computer science and two more audio-visual rooms with multi functions available to students encouraged to further their study.
The number of current faculty members amounts to 180, of whom 112 are teachers including two master teachers (特级教师) working nowadays. Five more master teachers that retired are re-employed to direct the school education. 45 teachers enjoy the senior professional (高级教师) titles and 46 others have the junior professional (中级教师) titles. 1115 students are classified into 25 classes (a cohort of students of the same academic level) from Senior One (高一) to Senior Three (高三).
The purpose of the school education is to lay a solid foundation of the basic knowledge for the students, which actually makes its name for the perfect teaching methodology and down to the ground learning attitude towards the education. Recently, the school, drawing the strength from the traditional teaching method, has tried every means possible to carry out the new research work only to confirm the inner meaning of the basic knowledge to be properly given to the kids in school. During the course, the students are required to learn as much as they can about how to behave well, how to care so much for others and how to accurately estimate themselves. The talent for creation entirely comes to light by means of scientific research on study and the school kids here are far ahead of their counterparts in almost competitions held internationally and domestically. The well-designed composition contest, the competitive Olympic contest, and Leida contest for science and technology of any kind can see the first, the second and the third winners coming from this school. As a result, these achievements have gained the fame for school, for Shanghai and even for the country. Many evidences show that this acquired progress has fully demonstrated the correct attitude to seeking the truth from the facts and the talent for creating something new. Needless to say, the graduates from this school can enjoy high reputation and will be warmly welcomed by all the communities and the schools of high learning. Among 300 students, about 100 are admitted into Fudan University each year.
